Top Packing Tips for International Moves from Dubai

International moves place your belongings under significantly more stress than a local delivery. A box that survives a 20-minute drive in Dubai may not survive 25 days in a sea container. These packing tips come from K2 Relocation's team who pack household goods for international shipments every day.

Start With the Right Boxes

Not all boxes are equal. For international moves, use:

Double-walled corrugated cartons — single-wall boxes collapse under the weight of stacked cargo in containers
Standard sizes — uniformity makes stacking efficient and reduces void space
Purpose-specific boxes — wardrobe boxes with hanging rails, dish packs for crockery, mirror boxes for framed art

Boxes you saved from last year's delivery are not suitable for an international move.

The Golden Rule: Fill Every Box Completely

Half-empty boxes collapse when stacked. Every box must be filled to the top — with the actual items plus void fill (paper, bubble wrap, foam peanuts). When you close the box, the top should be flat and slightly firm, not caved in.

Wrap Everything Individually

In a sea container, subtle ship movement over 20+ days creates vibration. Items touching each other will scratch, chip or break. Every item — every plate, every glass, every picture frame — should be wrapped individually before being placed in a box.

Label Every Box on Two Sides

Labels on the top only get covered when boxes are stacked. Write the contents and destination room on at least two sides. Number boxes and create an inventory list — this helps enormously at customs.

Electronics Require Special Care

Use original packaging where available
If original packaging is gone, pack in foam-lined boxes with at least 5cm of padding on all sides
Label boxes clearly: ELECTRONICS — FRAGILE — THIS SIDE UP
Remove all batteries (fire hazard in air freight; battery leakage in sea containers)
For sea freight, add desiccant sachets to absorb moisture

Furniture Preparation

Disassemble all furniture that can be taken apart
Wrap every surface in moving blankets before wrapping in stretch wrap
Bag all hardware (screws, bolts, allen keys) and tape the bag to the piece it belongs to
Photograph furniture from multiple angles before packing — valuable for insurance claims

Clothing and Textiles

Wash everything before packing — stains and odours set during long storage
Vacuum seal bags save significant space in your container
Store out of season items at the bottom of boxes
Keep a separate bag with items you will need in the first week at your destination

Documents and Valuables

Never pack important documents in the sea freight shipment — carry them personally
This includes: passports, birth certificates, medical records, financial documents, jewellery
Prepare a scanned digital copy of every important document stored in cloud storage

Create an Inventory as You Pack

Box by box, note the contents in a spreadsheet or app. This serves three purposes:

Customs documentation (required for most countries)
Insurance claims if anything is damaged or lost
Unpacking — you know exactly which box has what
