Moving from Dubai to Canada: Everything You Need to Know

Canada is a top destination for UAE residents relocating internationally. With its strong economy, high quality of life and large expat communities in cities like Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa, moving from Dubai to Canada is a well-travelled route.

Goods shipped from Jebel Ali Port transit to Canadian ports via the following approximate timelines:

  • Vancouver (West Coast): 20–28 days
  • Montreal / Halifax (East Coast): 30–40 days

From the port, trucking to your final Canadian city adds a few additional days.

Canadian Customs: Importing Personal Effects

Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) allows returning residents and new immigrants to import personal and household goods duty and tax-free under Tariff Item 9807.00.00, subject to the following conditions:

  • Goods must have been owned, used and in your possession before arriving in Canada
  • New residents must list goods on a B4 (Personal Effects Accounting Document) before or at arrival
  • Goods arriving after you must be listed on a B4A (List of Goods)

Important: goods acquired after you moved away from Canada, or items not declared on arrival, may be subject to duties and GST.

What Needs to Be Declared

All goods must be itemised, including:

  • Furniture and appliances
  • Electronics and computers
  • Clothing and personal items
  • Vehicles (if applicable)
  • Alcohol and tobacco (quantities must be declared)

Things to Consider Before Shipping

Electrical compatibility: Canada uses 120V/60Hz. Most UAE appliances run on 220V/50Hz. Check compatibility before shipping large appliances.

Seasonal timing: If you are moving to a colder province, consider the timing. Arriving in winter without your household goods creates challenges.

Insurance: Cargo insurance is highly recommended for sea freight shipments to Canada.
